FEBRUARYBlues leave their markDuring Exercise Winterhawk this year, Cpl Steve Hill decided to leave his mark on the Line Control building with his own mural. This piece of art was painted when Steve had time between see off and see ins. The mural was painted to go with all the other squadrons’ paintings all over the building. As there were many other squadrons mentioned but not ours, he decided to add a tribute to The Red Arrows, and has included all of our names on the painting. Story by Leading Cadet Ross Peel. 19 February 2004
Hendon FlypastThis superb photo was taken when the Team did a fly past at Hendon back in December. It was taken by Richard Baker who is a well known photographer, working for a company called Independant Photographers Group (IPG). He is currently spending a year with us here at RAF Scampton documenting behind the scenes life of the Squadron. Copyright Richard Baker 19 February 2004
Red Arrows 40th Anniversary Season All Ranks Reunion2004 will herald the 40th season of display flying for The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team, The Red Arrows. As part of the celebrations to mark this auspicious landmark, the current members of the Team intend to hold a reunion at Royal Air Force Scampton, on Saturday 22nd May 2004, for all former members of the Team, officers and airmen; the reunion will not be open to members of the public. The planned programme for the day will include:- Display by a Folland Gnat (if it can be arranged) Before and after the flying displays, our hangar will be open and static aircraft will be on display. Much of the squadron memorabilia will also be on display. As part of the hangar display, we intend to have on show, photographs of as many Team members as possible. To that end, we would ask that those wishing to attend send a photograph of themselves from their time with RAFAT to the Squadron Adjutant. These photographs will be grouped by year and displayed in the hangar. The location of the social function will be determined by the response we receive. Unfortunately, we cannot provide accommodation at Scampton but if we have sufficient interest we may be able to arrange discounts with local hotels. Transport will be provided from local hotels to and from the evening function. Those wishing to attend this reunion should contact the Squadron Adjutant at: The Red Arrows email: nospam[email protected] (remove nospam before sending). Please send your message as plain text and not HTML. Please state clearly in your letter: Your current address As a souvenir of the day we intend to produce a “nominal roll” of all those attending (by year served). To the best of our knowledge, this will be the first time that such a Red Arrows reunion has been organised and we would be delighted to see as many former colleagues as possible. 04 February 2004
Why do we go to Cyprus? In common with the rest of the United Kingdom, Scampton suffered some dreadful weather last week. This shot was taken from a Firefly flown by Sqn Ldr John Temple who is Officer Commanding Elementary Examiners at the Central Flying School. The photographer was Sqn Ldr Kev Grayon who is the Staff Officer at the same organisation. In contrast to this bleak scene, the Reds have been enjoying relatively balmy weather in Cyprus. We have also updated the Winterhawk galley page with photographs taken by SAC Nick Lyon. For the latest images from the training sorties, click HERE. 03 February 2004
