WD325 – de Havilland Chipmunk T Mk10

The most recent aircraft to join the AHAF is the De Havilland Chipmunk T10, WD 325. The Chipmunk holds many fond memories for all army pilots, as it was this type that was used as the basic trainer on all Army Pilots courses since the early 1950s.

WD 325 was one of the first aircraft to be delivered to Middle Wallop arriving in 1953. Initially the Royal Air Force were responsible for training AOP pilots and the original aircraft were furnished in the standard RAF Training Command markings of silver with a yellow band.

However, it was not until the formation of the AAC on 1 September 1957 that the markings reflected the familiar red and white colour scheme.
The Chipmunk T10 was popular as a trainer being easy to handle on the ground as well as in the air. At its peak the School of Army Aviation operated 21 aircraft in daily use prior to their out of service date in March 1997.
