Comments:Have just been surfing the site, having watched the Flight on many occasions this year. Dad was radio ops training on Lancs at the end of the war and has so much enjoyed seeing the plane in flight!

Comments:I Visited the centre last week without knowing much about the aircraft but had Terry take us on the guided tour and he was brilliant and told us some really insteresting things. I came away wanting to know more about the planes and visited the Lancaster base nearby but that centre was not as informative as the raf battle of britain centre. thanks to terry and all the staff for making my visit memorable. I cant wait to visit again !

Comments:The BBMF sounds ok to me. Yes the Battle of Britain was mainly a fighter command effort etc but the BBMF isnt about the battle of britain as in summer 1940 but the battle of britain in general throughout the second world war. We all know it as the BBMF and kids will hopefully grow up knowing it as the BBMF. i was confused as a kid also but i was told the reasons etc and now i understand. it will be the same for all young kids. they will learn and tell their kids when their older and grandkids.
Hope to see the BBMF over Blackpool in 07.

Comments:Chris Chandler is right because the Lancaster was not in service at the Battle of Britain but it symbolises the part that Bomber Command played in that campaign. Bristol Blenheims, Handley Page Hampdens, Vickers Wellingtons and Armstrong Whitleys were the aircraft used to attack airfields, aircraft factories and invasion barges. There has always been a misunderstanding that the Battle of Britain was a concern only to Fighter Command.

Comments: The BBMF is the best thing in aviation history, BUT can the name be changed !!??? I do WW2 talks to children and they are growing up thinking that Lancasters flew in the Battle of Britain ! On occasions I have had children who have seen th BBMF confused when i tell them Lancasters did not fly in the B of B.We have Sally B as memphis belle even though shes a G model so lets not warp history even more by making them think Lancasters were in the B of B.The name Battle FOR Britain memorial flight may help historical accuracy ! Comments:I am a Civilian Instructor with 1248 (Prudhoe) Sqn., Air Training Corps. I have visited the BBMF on many occasions, and have links with the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre at East Kirkby, through my father’s wartime RAF service.
On Remembrance Sunday, our Sqn. + band were in a parade marching through Ryton, to the west of Newcastle upon Tyne when the BBMF Dakota flew nearby from the south, did a wide left- hand turn almost over the parade, and departed to the north.
This was at approx. 1330hrs.
Can the crew tell us if the circuit was in response to seeing the parade?
If so, it could not have been more appropriate nor more effective! It certainly impressed many people, including at least one ex WW2 Air Gunner who was told by our CO that it had been arranged for his benefit!
Whatever the reason, which we would love to know,it was a brilliant show:many thanks!

Comments:I would like to congratulate and thank Sgt Bernard Clark’s family for the reproduction of his diary associated with 61 Sqdn. Although names and personalities on the Squadron were different to when I went there in March ’45, his account of activities and deprivations rang many bells with me. I think all us wished we kept diaries because over the many years our memories dim. I will occasionally refer to the diary to remind myself of how it really was on operations.

Comments:I’ve seen the aircraft at many airshows over the years,but this year was my first LLA Day and it certainly won’t be my last!!.
I made myself a member last year,attended with my cousins Bill and Richard and brought along a close pal as my guest(who’s now made himself a member).We had a fabulous day out.
My cousin Rich introduced me to some of the aircrew who signed my yearbook and chatted to us as well as some of the wartime fighter and bomber boys who were present.
The flying display was superb with ,for me anyway,Clive and Bob stealing the scene with their awsome final displays on the Flight.
A huge thanks to all the BBMF personel,ground and aircrews,for keeping these tremendous aeroplanes in such “showroom”condition to ensure that We Never Forget.

The PA system was turned off as you came in to view, the crowd was completely silent as you flew past us all. So important we never foget the price paid by so many and this is the very best way of remembering it. Comments:Though saddened to hear that the inimitable ‘Birdy’ had signed his last F700, I was delighted to see in the shape of his personalised Hurricane such a fitting tribute to his life and times. Birdy, as OC Royal Air Force Coltishall (1960), was my CO during the introduction of the Lightning to 74 (Tiger) Squadron. I served as FW Adjutant to the then Wg Cdr David Evans and it was a signal honour to have served with both these men. There are other connections! I note that 363 was also assigned to No 26 (AC) Squadron on which I did two tours in the 50s in 2nd TAF. Close to Tavistock is the old Harrowbeer Airfield, which earlier this month hosted the Spitfire Society, who are currently building a replica locally. The airfield also hosted both a Two-Six detachment and Birdy during WW 2. The have a short illustrated history in which is A photo of Birdy standing by the holed tail of a Spitfire! Comments:Sat in the garden about 5 pm , September 3rd heard an unusual noise. At first I thought it wa helicopter, but as it grew louder i realised this was something else, a DC3 perhaps? I jumped up and turned round just in time to see the Spitfire ,Hurricane and Lancaster flying directly over my house. Tingles down the spine, what a sight, they were low enough to make out the pilots, and the sun was in the right position to allow me to see the colours on the upper surfaces as they banked away. Brilliant, only wish I had my camera to hand. It prompted me to find your website to check out the tantalising possibility there might be another local fly past. Pleased to say that they will be at Elvington later this month… Can’t wait, the sight and sound of these aircraft is very moving, as a post war baby that may seem strange to some, but they evoke a sense of pride that few other aircraft can.

Comments:Today I was happily sitting in my garden, beautiful weather etc when I heard an earth shattering roar that preceded a Lancaster bomber that flew right over our house and then followed by a Spitfire & Hurricane. The Battle of Britain flight had arrived for a flying display over Morecambe and the bay! marvellous stuff – as one of the first batch of the post war “baby boomers” and an Ex RN Fleet Airm Arm it brought a lump to my throat. They stayed for about 15-20 minutes. What a wonderful way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon. Thankyou for keeping these wonderful aircraft flying. They are a tribute to the men who flew them and saved us in those dark days. No other country in the world has ever come remotely near producing aircraft such as these. Thankyou again.

Comments:Sitting in my office wishing the day away, and i heard this thunderous roar bearing down on us. I stood, went to the window and peered skyward (an avid flyer myself i always go plane spotting when i get the chance). I expected to see some standard small aircraft, or perhaps a low helicopter.. but as the sound grew nearer, there was no mistaking the roar of those merlin engines.
The Lancaster, Hurricane and a Spitfire all in formation, probably 1000′ AGL and no more than 200 meters distance from my office window. Contrasted against a crisp clear blue sky.
Wonderful. Its soul stirring stuff, and I thank each and every one of you for your efforts in keeping these magnificant aircraft flying for all to see.

My parents, who have known WWII, have educated me to admire RAF more than any other service.
I am an enthusiast reader of “souvenirs” (Douglas Bader, Johnnie Johnson, Peter Townsend… and Free French alike: René Mouchotte, Pierre Clostermann, Jean Maridor… I also read many war fiction novels, especially by Mr Frederick E. Smith (633 Squadron), and one of my favourite albums is M. Chaz Bowyer’s : “Pathfinders at war”.

Comments:Gutted!!!! the BBMF was due here (blackpool) a few months back when they were displaying in ireland they were using blackpool as a “base” if you like, but bad weather stopped them coming here, anyway was really looking forward to seeing the mighty Hurricane (and others) whilst they were here this weekend for southport, but.. as fate would have it the weather was bad and they didnt turn up. Though todays weather was nice and everything flew (except BBMF), maybe its fate that us blackpool folk will just never get to see them nice planes. I hope to god the manage to get to morecambe next week just so we can get a brief look at them, once this year.

Comments:Our Visit to RAF Conningsby was fantastic to say the least. The knowledge of the guides was never ending and very interesting. Three of my Gandparents where in the RAF and I had goose bumps all the way through the hanger. It was a once in a life time experience to see them up close and personal, we also visited The Petwood Hotel where the crew stayed before there sortes it was an amasing day thanks to all at the BBMF. Keeping it all very much alive for us that are too young to remember any of WW2.

I was at Eastbourne Airbourne on Sunday 20 August and had the privilege to see the BBMF display. An image presented itself during the display that will remain with me forever! As the display was drawing to an end and on the final run along the beach towards Beachy Head I noticed a very old man, on his own standing on the beach waving slowly with booth arms as the aircraft came by. He watched them disappear into the distance he didn’t seem to notice the fast jet coming in for its display as the BBMF eventually faded from view.

Comments:As a 34 Year Old Woman, with an unhealthy fear of flying and all things ‘aviation’, I bravely took myself off to the Sunderland Air Show specifically to see the Battle of Britain memorial Flight on the 30th July in honour of my late Mum, who would have celebrated her 71st birthday on the same date.
For as long as I can remember, my Mum’s biggest passion was this tiny little green plane with circles on its wings.
As a child, I never quite ‘got it’. It was just a plane, and at the time, (dare I say it), not a particularly fancy one!
Nonetheless, her passion proved to be extremely useful on Birthday’s and Christmas’s, as I was never stuck for a gift idea. To name a few, I can remember buying a miniature glass version (you know the ones in the dome), the occasional commemorative plate, a painting or two, various copies of the beautiful ‘High Flight’ poem, and one year I even went as far as an inflatable toy version. Basically all things ‘Spitfire’ guaranteed success for me. ‘Success’ could be defined as the biggest smile on my Mum’s face or better still, a little tear in her eye and that look that said ‘Ah Sonia Sweetheart, a Spitfire, my favourite thing, that’s perfect!’
In mid 1995, I found a Spitfire Museum in Kent, near RAF Manson, and was so thrilled to have found a real ‘little green plane with circles on its wings’, that in September of that year, I dragged my Mum all 300 and odd miles to see it and one of my most precious memories still, is of my Mum kissing the tips of the Spitfire’s wings (even though she wasn’t supposed to touch it!).
Sadly my Mum died at the age of 60, in April 1996, and the ‘little green plane’ suddenly took on a special meaning in my life. All of the gifts that I had bought her, (that peppered my childhood home), now belonged to me…and what had previously been a convenience to me, in terms of gift buying ideas, now meant that I was left with a legacy of Spitfire ‘stuff’ and although I have not gotten rid of it, I must confess the majority (including the inflatable toy) sits in cardboard boxes, in my loft.
Since 1996, the mention of The Spitfire has brought a bittersweet smile to my lips, but just last week, I found myself in a dilemma. I learned that the air show was happening in Sunderland on the 29th and 30th July, (the latter being my Mum’s Birthday) and that the BBMF, featuring a Spitfire would be included in the display. I HATE planes, (Did I mention my fear of flying??!!)
Anyway the 30th arrives and I am drawn to Sunderland to see the Spitfire doing its ‘bit’. I force myself to take part in the ‘Park and Ride’ adventure, (that is a lit bit scary to those of us who haven’t seen the interior of a ‘Double Decker’ since the days of the school bus!), try desperately to ignore the sound of engines in the sky, buy myself an ice lolly and position myself in the crowd to pay tribute to my Mum and see her ‘baby’ fly.
The commentator announces the arrival of The Hurricane and The Spitfire (The Lancaster is not part of the display today, sadly it’s grounded, but hey, I didn’t come to see the big green plane did I?). I look along the beach to my right and in they come….The Hurricane is followed gracefully by The Spitfire and I am surprised to see that this particular Spitfire is blue, not green and I can only see what appears to be black and white stripes under its wings, ….I have no idea if its even got the circles!!!
They fly off to my left and then the Spitfire dances solo in the sky, followed swiftly by the Hurricane, both showing the crowd what they are made of. Then they are back together and my Mum’s favorite chases its pal and ‘cheekily’ waggles its wings (sorry if that’s not aviation speak).
Then suddenly the most bizarre thing happens, I ‘get it’, the little green plane with the circles on its wings (or blue in this case with black and white stripes underneath!)… its got personality. It’s almost cute. Yes, I know it’s a fighter plane, I know that the brave men who fought and sadly, in some cases died for my country and ultimately for me, used that ‘little green plane’ in their quest, but I finally ‘get it’… I know why she loved the Spitfire, and as I gaze heavenward to see the little trickster, I know she’s watching him too, with the biggest smile on her face and better still, a little tear in her eye with that look on her face that say’s ‘Ah Sonia Sweetheart, a Spitfire, my favourite thing, it’s perfect!!’

Comments:In October 2004 I was kindly given permission to look around the BBMF hangar and to enter PA474.
As a Lancaster pilot with 514 Sqdn., Waterbeach in 1944/45 I was able to relive many memories whilst sitting once again in the cockpit. I longed to hear the roar of those 4 merlin engines once again, but maintenance was in progress. My thanks to the staff of BBMF for giving me the opportunity of legging it over the main spar once again in spite of my 83 years. Looking forward to seeing PA474 once again at the Airshow at Eastbourne in August 2006, by courtesy of the dedication of the aircrew, engineers and fitters.

Comments:Walking the dog round Lynch Wood today. heard a distant aircraft, and remarked to my son “Sounds like a Merlin” to which he replied “Just sounds like any old plane.” The sound faded, then a minute or so later there was the unmistakeable sound of multiple Merlins heading almost straight for us. Suddenly through the trees we saw THE Lancaster, banking starboard following the river Nene. My son said “Thats a bit low isn’t it?” The lump in my throat prevented my reply. Absolute magic!

Comments:On Sunday, 18th June 2006 Cleethorpes Golf Club held a golf competition for the “Douglas
Bader Cup” sponsored by the Bader Foundation.
I,as Chairman of the Social Committee at the club, felt it would make a worthwhile competion into a
memorable one with the addition of a Spitfire flypast.
As the competition progressed during the afternoon everyone had to stop and look skyward at 2.30pm
“on the button” as Spitfire AB910 piloted by Squadron Leader Al Pinner proceeded to “beat up” the
golf course !!
It is the mark of an exceptional display pilot that wherever people were watching from, each felt
they had the best view of all!
I have never seen so many people waving flags, golf-clubs and anything else they could get their
hands on in response to this wonderful sight!
There weren’t many dry eyes on the course after this although the adrenalin rush this gave me
enabled me to birdie the next three holes !!

Comments:Hearing the distinctive grumble of Merlin engines approaching on Saturday 17th at about
12:30, we dashed outside to see the beautiful 5 ship formation pass right over our house near
Romford in Essex while the BBMF were circling awaiting the run in to the Mall in London – we were

Comments:I have just heard on the news that the Beckhams cancelled a flypast by the Flight on the grounds “that it was inappropriate ahead of the World Cup”. I think that is an absolute disgrace, they would do well to remember that without these magnificent aircraft and the sacrifice of the brave young men who flew them that they now live in a society that has the freedom to enable them to take part in a World Cup.

Comments:a few years ago in june on a sunday i was hanging out my washing in the back garden around 1.30pm when i heard a very familiar noiselooking upi saw the lancaster followed closely by the spitfire, in my joy i was jumping up and down to try and attract their attention, i was rewarded by the lancaster coming very low and the spitfire tipping its wings for me. that made my day. the quorn display is due in june on the 10th and 11th june andi see that i am to be rewarded again with the sight of both of them. SO IF THE FLIGHT CREW READ THIS AND THEY SEE SOME MAD WOMAN WAVING HER ARMS IN THE AIR THAT WEEKEND ITS ONLY ME ENJOYING BOTH THE AIRCRAFT THAT I LOVE.

What a fantastic, moving sight it was to see the Lancaster, flanked by the Hurricane and Spitfire appear in the sky. My family was there to honour my uncle and his crew who were shot down during WWII, killing all seven crew. The sight of those three great aircraft will live long in our memories. Comments:It is a great pity so few aircraft from that vintage are still airworthy, although all things considered, it is impressive any survived at all. An actual “Battle of Britain” Spitfire – and one that had been in three major accidents, at that – is a major achievement by any standard. I hope other aircraft can be restored to the point of airworthiness – I am sure the sky misses the Mosquitos. Although these were not in the Battle of Britain itself, their later significance is unquestionable. The Blenheim is down to one airworthy model, reputedly. The Boulton Paul Defiant is down to a small section in a museum, without even replicas to grace the name. What would be wonderful would be for the RAF, or historical group, to repair what exists and reproduce what is no longer, to produce as complete a flying memorial as can be achieved. History forgets quickly and easily, without these reminders.

Got to look around the Lanc when it was in blackpool not so long ago. took my grandad on board, he was a rear gunner on lancs doing 2 tours. it was quite emotional for his as it was the first time he has been in a lanc since the war. i need help, he was in 50 SQUADRON during WW2 based at skellingthorpe, i would lvoe to see some pics of 50 SQUADRON lancs and info on the place. can anyone help? also… this year the BBMF (lanc,spit,hurri) are doing a flyby in blackpool on MAY 21ST then they are also at duxford the same day. its only a flyby in blackpool, and theres no other displays for the lanc that day. why come all the way here just for a fly by? it seems abit out of the way and surely there cant be to many hours left on the old girl? just seems so far just to fly past. Comments:Im 22 years old and love seeing the BBMF (especially the Hurricane), Just wondering.. my Grandad was a rear gunner in the lanc during the war (surviving 2 tours) when the lanc was in blackpool last, we got to go in and have a look around etc, it was quite emotional for him as it was the first time since the war he had been back in a lanc. this years displays for the BBMF, i see the Lanc, Spit, Hurricane are in blackpool doing a fly by, then a display at duxford. there the only 2 things the Lanc are doing that day (May 21st). If flying hours are so scarce, why is the Lanc and co coming all the way to blackpool (nowhere else other than duxford) just do do a fly by? if it was a display id understand. But its a long way out of the way just to fly past something surely? anyone help with this? thanks again.

Comments:My Mum, Sue, aged 83yrs, is a member of LLA (BBMF), and each September we travel down to RAF Coningsby for Members Day, where we get to see the mighty Lanc. and the Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Dakota. What a wonderful day, we also meet Veterans, and Ground Crew etc.
As a 16 year old, Mum started work at A.V. Roe’s up here, during WWII, helping to make the
mighty Lanc.She and other Avro staff were taken on a flight around Woodford airport during the war – so she can say she has flown in a Lancaster plane. She has a lot of wartime memories, and is now writing her memoirs! When she hears those mighty Merlin engines roar, and we watch the BBMFlight, there are lots of emotions and tears.
I am a member of a re-enactment group up here in the North, Friends of the Forties, we have our own website. Lots of 40’s dances, wartime weekends, and events. My late Dad served in the Royal Navy in WWII)

I’ve watched the BBMFsite for the last two years now.
Great information of the oldies.
And so is my dad, age 76 and a cardiac patient.
He lived during WWII in Tilburg near Breda in the south of The Netherlands. He made lots of miniature planes of the ones he saw of debris from planes that had crashed and has lots of memories of the allied airplanes that flew over.
Especially the Lancaster.
It’s one of his three favourites.

Now I’am hoping the Lancaster is going to be at the open days at Leeuwarden on june 16 and 17.
And that my dad can visit the plane to see it from the inside.
Two years ago he had the chance at the open days in Lelystad to go on board the Dutch DC-2 “Uiver”, who won the London-Melbourne speedrace in 1934.
A revalation. It made his day!
Last year we had the open days at airbase Gilze-Rijen, between Tilburg and Breda.
The Lancaster was present but sadly he made a fly by, landed and went into the shelter so we didn’t get to see the plane at the static show.
Hopefully he will be stationed at the Leeuwarden open days on the strip.

Comments:Impressive, informative website. BBMF does an excellent job in reminding thousands about the role the RAF played during WW2. Since I first started attending airshows in the early 90s, I have never visited an event where the BBMF have displayed and the crowd has not been silenced when the Lancaster, Spitfire and Hurricane fly over. That’s reflective of the unique role BBMF plays in conserving and remembering WW2: a living, vivid and tangible link with an important part of our history for today’s generations.
