Blue Eagles Newsflash!Following the events of 9/11 and the increase of operational deployments that ensued, it was necessary to remove the Lynx from the Blue Eagles Helicopter Display Team for the 2002 Season. Throughout 2002 the Director Army Aviation maintained an aspiration to reintroduce the Lynx to the team for the 2003 season if operational commitments allowed. Despite considerable pressures due to increased operational activity it has been deemed possible for the Lynx to take part in the Blue Eagles display during the 2003 Display Season. This year the team will use the same format as in 2001 – the fully aerobatic Lynx Mk 7 and four Gazelle AH 1 helicopters. The pilots have been selected, the team has formed at Middle Wallop and has begun the arduous training regime to bring them up to standard on the exacting requirements necessary to display these remarkably capable light helicopters in an exciting, but above all, safe manner. This will expand the pilot’s individual and formation skills significantly as many of the manoeuvres are limited exclusively to the Blue Eagles display team. The season this year has unfortunately been reduced to allow the Lynx to perform; it will last from the RAF Waddington International Airshow at the end of June to the Blenheim Palace Celebration of 100 Years of Flight on 2nd August. Once more DeltaWeb are signed up to provide their outstanding reporting as it happens at the airshows, updating the website from the venue. So look out for a multitude of new pictures and some very informed, authoritative commentary on the activities of the world’s Premier Helicopter Display Team. Pictures and short biographies of the team will be posted here in the next week or so. Keep up with ‘your’ team, check the website, why not make it your homepage?
